Walmart in Thailand

Many people who have been to America always ask if Walmart is in Thailand. The answer is Walmart is not in Thailand. There are many hypermarkets (same as Walmart Supercenters) in Thailand but not Walmart. Thailand is full of supercenters such as:

  • Siam Makro
  • Big C
  • Carrefour
  • Tesco Lotus

These stores sell what Walmart would sell which is pretty much everything minus specialized products.

Walmart in Thailand

Why isn’t Walmart in Thailand?

Walmart is well known for cheap items. However, most things in Thailand are already cheap. Big C sells very cheap low end items. Tesco Lotus is not far behind whereas Carrefour stores try to sell better items. Whereas in the US, people have a choice between Walmart and Target, in Thailand, there are lots of choices to choose from. So, if Walmart were to be in Thailand, Thai People wouldn’t be flocking to Walmart like people in the US would.

Price competition at Walmart

How much cheaper can Walmart afford to sell its goods in Thailand? Prices of items are already very cheap in Thailand at Big C, Tesco Lotus and Carrefour.

No space for Walmart in Thailand

All Walmart stores in the US are usually very big. In a crowded country like Thailand, there is no place big enough for an average Walmart.
