Hmong Show (in Chiang Mai, Thailand)

When visiting Chiang Mai, Thailand, you will come across many Hmong shows. One of the touristy Hmong show in Chiang Mai is the Hmong Hill Tribe Cultural Presentation which comes with the BBQ dinner and takes place at the Hmong Lodge Cultural Center.

After eating your BBQ dinner buffet (which is outdoor so beware if you visit Chiang Mai in the Winter, it can get very cold), you will watch many short Hmong shows or Hmong presentations. Below are the different Hmong Show for that tour. All Hmong shows are very short lasting about 5 minutes each.

Hmong Show

Hmong Show #1: The Merry Making

On the auspicious occasions such as New Year and the receptions of honorable guests, the Hmongs like to sing and dance together. The melody of Hmong songs in this show is influenced by Thai music as the Hmongs now attended Thai school.

Hmong Show #1 review: This first Hmong Show is probably the best Hmong show tonight. While it is interesting to see the Hmongs dressed in Hmong traditional costumes (you can see them on sale at the Chiang Mai Night Bazaar so they are not rare by any means) the Hmong dancers don't try very hard to impress. The Hmong show dance is sloppy so if you are expecting great performances, you will be disappointed.

Hmong Show #2: The Solo Singer

The tunes and the wording of the song are the Hmong's origin and related to love affairs and resentment. Hmong song does not accompany music or dance but music and dance do accompany each other.

Hmong Show #2 review: Again short performance and crude.
