How do you say Your Welcome in Thai?
Your Welcome is one of the difficult words
to say in Thai because there is not really a word that means
something as universal as Your Welcome. However, below are some
ways to say Your Welcome in the Thai language.
When someone says thank you to you
When someone thanks you, they will say
"Khoob Khun Ka/Krup" and salude you with a Wai. In English,
when someone thanks you alot you often say Your Welcome,
whereas in Thailand, when someone thanks you by Wai-ing you,
then you would just receive the Wai and wouldn't say anything.
You would smile instead of saying something which might
contribute to Thailand's reputation of the land of smile.
If you are an older person and someone young
that you are close to wai you to say thank you and
appreciation, you could just put your hands on theirs as a way
of expressing Your Welcome. However, if you don't know that
person well, it is not customary to touch thier hands so you
would just do a receive Wai instead.
In some cases, it is rude to not receive a
Wai when someone wais you.
Old person thanking young person
Since in Thailand, young people go
above and beyond to be humble and nice towards old people, if
an old person happens to thank a young person by saying "thank
you" then a young person would just smile and act humble.
If someone who is not so old thanks you, you
can say "KA" if you are a girl or woman and "KRUP" if you are a
man or a boy to acknowledge that they thanked you.
Now the ultimate way of saying Your Welcome
in Thai if you are very talkative is to actually say "It's OK"
or "It doesn't matter" as follow:
"Mai Pen Rai Ka" , or
"Mai Pen Rai Krup"
The first sentence is for a woman to say and
it means It doen't matter in a polite way. The second sentence
is for a man to say.
