If you are visiting Chiang Mai, Thailand, you probably have heard of the Handicraft Village as one of the must see tourist destination. The Handicraft Village is not just one village but a few buildings which are not even attached to each other. The Handicraft village is more like the part of Chiang Mai with handicraft centers. Lacquerware handicraft village (or Lacquerware handicraft center) is one of the most popular village out of all the handicraft villages in Chiang Mai.
At Lacquerware Handicraft Village, you will first be shown the process of making lacquerware. The demonstration takes about 5 minutes and the guide doesn't speak English but has memorized words so that she could demonstrate Lacquerware production. Immediately after the demonstration, you will be taken to the next room with tables. Each table is a step of the Lacquerware production. You can watch them but they won't answer any questions.

Then immediately afterward, you will arrive at the biggest room they have which is full of lacquerware products. Your guide and demonstrator will give you a basket and explain the discount she is giving you. Then you are free to wonder in that big room browsing the products while your guide follows you around making sure that she gets the commission when you buy something. |
If you don't like to be sold or don't like pushy salesmen, then vising handicraft villages in Chiang Mai may not be fun for you. Everything is commercialized and everything is about making the sale. If you are hoping for an educational tour, you will be disappointed.
