To learn how to speak Thai, you only need to know basic Thai grammar. Thai people can understand you even when your Thai grammar is not very good. The Thai language has many shorthands and shortened ways of saying things in Thai. So, when speaking Thai, you are expected to follow the colloquial rules of the Thai grammar. If you use perfect Thai grammar, on the other hand, Thai people will think you are either weird or not really from Thailand.
For examples, most Thai people when talking to merchants will not even refer to themselves using Thai pronouns, so if you always use the word 'I' in Thai when talking to a Thai merchant, he or she will sense that you are not really from Thailand and may not give you a good price for the merchandise. This makes the Thai language and Thai grammar very complicated because when speaking Thai, you are expected to follow the local rules or you will be outcast.
