When visiting Chiang Mai, Thailand, and looking for things to do and to see, the Chiang Mai Night Safari may come up. However, the Chiang Mai Night Safari is not very popular as an attraction in Chiang Mai. Most people opt to go to the Chiang Mai Zoo instead of the Chiang Mai Night Safari.

Why is the Chiang Mai Night Safari not as popular as the Chiang Mai Zoo?

Chiang Mai people deem the admission fee for the Chiang Mai Night Safari as too expensive, just like the Aquarium in Bangkok. With the night time rate of 500 Baht for adults and 300 Baht for children, local Chiang Mai people cannot afford to go often or at all. In Thailand, making anything too expensive for local Thais to go is a mistake. As a result, Chiang Mai people go to the Chiang Mai zoo, which costs much less, instead.

The Chiang Mai Night Safari is also best seen at night which is inconvenient for many people to begin with. Added to the fact that when visiting the Chiang Mai Night Safari, you cannot go by yourself in your car or on foot, you have to be in this tram with a bunch of other people and cannot stop where you want. A lot of the time, you don’t see the animals as advertised because you cannot force the animals to come out whenever you want them to. The tour is short and not as free as walking by yourself with your friends like you can at the Chiang Mai Zoo.

Less animals at the Chiang Mai Night Safari and more at the Chiang Mai Zoo

In the past, there are many more animals at the Chiang Mai Night Safari. However, with few visitors compared to the Chiang Mai Zoo, many of the animals have been moved from the Chiang Mai Night Safari to the Chiang Mai Zoo.

So, nowadays, the Chiang Mai Night Safari is not really worth visiting and the Chiangmai Night Safari exists mainly for tourists. Some tourists still visit the Chiangmai Night Safari but not many. There are plenty more other attractions to see in Chiang Mai than the Chiang Mai Night Safari. Many tours don’t even offer the Chiang Mai Night Safari tour anymore because visitors usually don’t give good feedback afterwards.
