Wat Phra Thart Doi Suthep in Chiang Mai Thailand is one of the most famous tourist attraction in Chiang Mai, Thailand. To drive up Doi Suthep to Wat Phra Thart Doi Suthep from the city of Chiang Mai takes about an hour since you have to drive up the mountains. The roads are ok for most parts but some parts are rough.

According to legend, holy relics discovered during the reign of King Kuena (1355-1385) were placed in a howdah on the back of a white elephant, which carried them to Wat Phrathat, then it dropped dead due to fatigue from a long journey. The present complex dates from the 16th century and was expanded or restored several times later. There are 306 steps, bordered by a NAGA balustrade, leading up from the parking area to the Doi Suthep Temple. The steps are beautifully decorated with Lanna style chedicovered with engraved gold paltes, flanked by four ornamental umbrellas.

  • show respect in the temple and shrine
  • take off our shoes before entering the platform around the Golden Chedi
  • keep your head lower than the Buddha images and monks
  • don’t touch the Buddha images
  • no public display of affection
  • always keep clean
